Our youth arts education program students from Studio 789 share the results of their year long journey through photography. These amazing young artists in grades 7 through 9 at Wilson Foundation Academy in Rochester have spent the past 24 weeks learning about photography, capturing images around Rochester with their manual 35mm film cameras, printing their work, writing and reflecting on their work, creating a book (with some help from students in PUB at RIT), matting/framing their prints and now exhibiting it and sharing it with YOU! Come celebrate with them on opening night where they will present a slide show of their images set to music, receive awards and recognition, help honor funders of this amazing program of Community Darkroom and show off their work for friends and family!

Works by Roycroft Master Artisan Laura Wilder
Friday, April 9, 2010 at 7:00 pm until Friday, April 30, 2010 at 5:00 pm
Come enjoy the works of this talented local artist and get a chance to speak with her about her latest methods and process on the opening night of this exhibit, June 4. Laura's inspiration comes from artists of the early twentieth century: Baumann, Steichen, Holwein, Voysey, Klimt, Bradley. The subjects she chooses to draw, paint, carve and print are all about that simpler more satisfying life, striving to inspire us to do meaningful work and to connect with and care for our natural world and each other. She has a varied body of work, bouncing back and forth between bold, postery decorative art and soft, spiritual fine art. Laura has received the title of Roycroft Master Artisan, been honored twice with Merit Awards at the Clothesline Arts Festival and now produces some of her fine art block prints at the Printing & Book Arts Center. Proceed and Be Bold
Monday, April 19, 2010 from 7:00 until 8:30
This stunningly photographed and craftily edited documentary covers the life and works of Amos Paul Kennedy Jr, an African American letterpress poster designer-and SO MUCH MORE! At 40 years of age, Kennedy abandoned the traditional American Dream to follow his own. Unsatisfied with his comfortable, middle-class life, Amos traded in his computer for a printing press and his suit and tie for a pink shirt and pair of overalls. Armed with life, liberty, peanuts, and a meager yearly income of $7,000, Amos cranked out a new, mutinous declaration of independence. His provocative sense of humor seeps out of every word he speaks and his radical philosophies on the American (un)consciousness will awaken any listless bystander. Proceed and Be Bold! joins Amos for a titillating retelling of his story, while examining the pretensions of the art world. The work of this self-proclaimed “Humble Negro Printer” raises emotionally-charged questions and reveals remarkable depth beneath the bold print. By learning the rules and then choosing to break them, Amos redefines what life (and letterpress printing) can be: exhilarating and subversive. If you think film is powerful, try a printing press! Tickets $7 adults, $5 students/seniors(over55) children(under12) Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 244-1730 or at the door on April 19th (cash only at the door).
