Class Description: Long stitch Binding is distinguished by the long stitches you see on the spine attaching the signatures to the cover. We will use metal tie plates as the covers, leather as the spine, an assortments of different papers for the signatures and eyelets and other interesting metal objects to embellish this book. Bring a small hammer, eyelet setter, and 1/8” hole punch if you have them, but not necessary. Tools will be available.

Lenses, Flash, & Elements of Portraiture

Class Description: This three part lecture series will cover the technical and creative use of both film and digital cameras. The first night will cover basic optical theory, wide-angle, telephoto, and specialty lenses and digital sensor size determining effective lens focal length. Lens apertures, depth of field, hyperfocal distances, sharpness and resolution will be discussed as well as various lens attachments. The second night will cover electronic flash theory and application using built-in flash, external flashes, creative flash techniques and painting with light. The third session on portraiture will concentrate on lighting - types of light, backgrounds, posing, and exposure. Rediscover one of the earliest processes in photography, the salted paper process invented by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1834. We will make enlarged negatives in the darkroom, which can be used for a variety of printing processes, then make photograms on plain salted paper (just as Talbot did), then work our way into the 1840’s and beyond, using our negatives and gelatin sizing. Basic black and white printing skills are needed.

Class Description: Learn the basics of wet plate collodion. An historic photographic process invented in 1851, wet plate collodion is once again gaining popularity among contemporary photographers. You will learn how to cut, clean, and polish glass and how to pour, sensitize, expose, develop. and fix the plate. Images will be made using a large format camera with converted plate holders and the final images will be dried, varnished, and housed. Bring an apron or clothing you won’t mind staining permanently. Clear glass and chemistry will be provided. If you have a large format camera and tripod, please bring it along. Otherwise a large format camera will be provided.

Class Description: Create uniquely beautiful images by learning two alternative processes - how to hand-coat liquid silver gelatin emulsion onto watercolor paper or fabric and print an image in the darkroom, and hand-apply color to black and white prints.
