Class Description:	This three part lecture series will cover the technical and creative use of both film and digital cameras. The first night will cover basic optical theory, wide-angle, telephoto, and specialty lenses and digital sensor size determining effective lens focal length. The second night will cover electronic flash theory and application using built-in flash, external flashes, creative flash techniques and painting with light. Rediscover one of the earliest processes in photography, the salted paper process invented by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1834. Students will see the beauty of the salt print with it’s simplicity of materials, long tonal scale and variability of effects. We will make enlarged negatives in the darkroom, which can be used for a variety of printing processes, then make photograms on plain salted paper (just as Talbot did), then work our way into the 1840’s and beyond, using our negatives and gelatin sizing. Basic black and white printing skills are needed.

Class Description:	Learn the basics of wet plate collodion. An historic photographic process invented in 1851, wet plate collodion is once again gaining popularity among contemporary photographers. You will learn how to cut, clean, and polish glass and how to pour, sensitize, expose, develop. and fix the plate. Images will be made using a large format camera with converted plate holders and the final images will be dried, varnished, and housed. Bring an apron or clothing you won’t mind staining permanently. Clear glass and chemistry will be provided. If you have a large format camera and tripod, please bring it along. Otherwise a large format camera will be provided.
