For the past 30 years photography has undergone many spectacular changes: a shift from black and white to color, from 8x10 to wall-size prints, from film to digital; it has triumphantly entered higher education, and the fine-art market, and finally it has undergone a digital revolution. This presentation will try and examine the consequences of such changes on the production of photographs, on the evolution in photographic subjects, contents and esthetics. This lecture will provide you with a few tools to better approach and understand contemporary photography along with works of key-photographers to illustrate these points.

Painting with Pulp

Pulp painting is an emerging specialty attracting many artists with backgrounds in painting, drawing, printmaking, and other disciplines. To create a pulp painting, specially prepared pulps are applied to a freshly made sheet of handmade paper in a number of ways, sometimes with the aid of stencils, sometimes freehand, resulting in a finished sheet of paper that fully incorporates the image. The synthesis of substrate, medium, and image is a unique characteristic of the pulp painting medium, allowing artists to work not merely on paper, but in paper.

Paper Marbling

Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to marble or other stone. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution known as “sizing”, and then carefully transferred to a sheet of paper. It is often employed as a writing surface for calligraphy, and especially book covers and endpapers in bookbinding and stationery. Part of its appeal is that each print is a unique monotype.

Poetry, Pottery, & Paper

Kids Camp, Ages 9-12. In this collaboration between Writers & Books and the Genesee Center for the Arts and Education, you will have a unique opportunity to merge visual arts with creative writing. You will use a press mold to create a ceramic book, write pottery-inspired poems, interview real artists, and have a chance to use a printing press to print one of your own poems. Perhaps you will even try your hand at making your own paper! This workshop will be a real hands-on experience taught by professional artists and writers at both the Genesee Center for the Arts located on Monroe Ave. in the old fire station, and at Writers & Books on University Ave. in the old police station
