Materials used will be non-toxic, no acid etching or oil based inks. Paper MarblingPaper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to marble or other stone. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution known as ‘sizing’, and then carefully transferred to a sheet of paper. It is often employed as a writing surface for calligraphy, and especially book covers and endpapers in bookbinding and stationery. Part of its appeal is that each print is a unique monotype. Introduction to Wood EngravingIf you enjoy linoleum block printing, try the time-honored craft of wood engraving. Wood engraving utilizes special carving tools employed to the end-grain of hard woods - or the modern synthetic version, known as Resingrave - resulting in amazingly detailed images that compliment letterpress work. Students will learn techniques for carving blocks, creating and transferring imagery, and printing edition prints. We’ll gain confidence as we practise with basic techniques such as tonal development, texture, straight lines and curves. We will then develop a drawing, transfer it to the block and carve. Our final image will be proofed and printed on a press. No prior printing experience required. Experience with wood-carving, linoleum carving, and intaglio etching helpful. Introduction to Wood Engraving**This is a late-starting summer class If you enjoy linoleum block printing, try the time-honored craft of wood engraving. Wood engraving utilizes special carving tools employed to the end-grain of hard woods - or the modern synthetic version, known as Resingrave - resulting in amazingly detailed images that compliment letterpress work. Students will learn techniques for carving blocks, creating and transferring imagery, and printing edition prints. We’ll gain confidence as we practise with basic techniques such as tonal development, texture, straight lines and curves. We will then develop a drawing, transfer it to the block and carve. Our final image will be proofed and printed on a press. No prior printing experience required. Experience with wood-carving, linoleum carving, and intaglio etching helpful. Paper Marbling**This is a late-starting summer class Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to marble or other stone. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution known as ‘sizing’, and then carefully transferred to a sheet of paper. It is often employed as a writing surface for calligraphy, and especially book covers and endpapers in bookbinding and stationery. Part of its appeal is that each print is a unique monotype.
