Rencontres d’Arles Oldest and Most Prestigious of International Photography Festivals*

From a small group of friends discussing photography and projecting slides in the courtyard of a local museum, Les Rencontres now has a $6 million budget, attracting over 70,000 visitors to its 50 and more exhibitions, workshops, an international symposium, a $30,000 “discovery” award, portfolio reviews, and night projections in the Roman antique theater. Having witnessed and participated in the festival for twenty years, from student to photo critic and instructor, Bruno will present the festival history, challenges, and exhibitions and discuss its impact on the creation of numerous other festivals.
