Introduction to Wood Engraving

If you enjoy linoleum block printing, try the time-honored craft of wood engraving. Wood engraving utilizes special carving tools employed to the end-grain of hard woods - or the modern synthetic version, known as Resingrave - resulting in amazingly detailed images that compliment letterpress work.

Students will learn techniques for carving blocks, creating and transferring imagery, and printing edition prints. We’ll gain confidence as we practise with basic techniques such as tonal development, texture, straight lines and curves. We will then develop a drawing, transfer it to the block and carve. Our final image will be proofed and printed on a press. No prior printing experience required. Experience with wood-carving, linoleum carving, and intaglio etching helpful. Students will leave with multiple prints and enough skills to work independently.
